Trong năm điều giới do đức Phật chế định, có lẽ điều giới không uống rượu là có nhiều ý kiến khác biệt nhất trong đa số Phật tử. Nhiều người lập luận rằng, chỉ khi nào uống say mới gọi là phạm giới. Những người khác, tuy không nói ra nhưng mặc nhiên thừa nhận quan điểm đó bằng cách thường xuyên tiếp cận với rượu bia, miễn là không đến mức say xỉn. Và nếu chúng ta nhìn một cách tổng quát trong sinh hoạt giao tế hiện nay, thì số người thực sự không chạm môi đến các chất gây say như bia rượu có lẽ không nhiều lắm. Một số khác nữa thì viện dẫn rằng đức Phật vẫn cho  phép các vị tỳ-kheo dùng rượu nếu cần thiết để trị bệnh, vậy nếu uống đôi chút rượu bia mà “tốt cho sức khỏe” thì hẳn không thể gọi là phạm giới.

Từ những quan niệm dễ duôi như trên, chúng tôi chợt nhớ đến một câu chuyện trong kinh Đại Bát Niết-bàn, đức Phật kể về một con quỷ dạ-xoa đi theo nài nỉ xin của người kia tấm phao vượt biển. Khi không xin được nguyên chiếc phao, nó cố nài nỉ để xin một nửa. Không được một nửa, nó cố xin một chút. Cuối cùng, vẫn không xin được một chút, nó lại nài nỉ: “Thế ông hãy cho tôi một miếng cực nhỏ, chỉ bằng mũi kim thôi cũng được.”

Đức Phật dạy rằng, người khôn ngoan thì dù một miếng cực nhỏ bằng mũi kim cũng không thể đồng ý cho đi, bởi như thế chắc chắn chiếc phao sẽ xì hơi và không còn có thể giữ an toàn cho người ấy khi vượt biển. Và qua câu chuyện, đức Phật liên hệ đến việc giữ giới của người Phật tử để chỉ ra rằng, đừng cho rằng một việc rất nhỏ nhoi phạm vào giới luật thì sẽ không sao. Giống như chiếc phao

Lại có câu chuyện khác kể về một người kia bị đẩy vào tình huống buộc phải phạm một trong năm giới. Ông suy nghĩ, giới sát rất nặng nề, chắc chắn không thể phạm vào. Việc trộm cắp thì người khinh chê, cũng không thể phạm. Cả hai giới tà dâm và nói dối cũng đều xấu xa, nên chỉ có việc uống rượu xem ra là nhẹ nhất. Và ông chọn chỉ phạm vào giới này. Thế nhưng sự thật là sau khi đã uống rượu say, trong lúc không còn tự chủ ông bắt đầu lần lượt phạm vào cả bốn giới trước đó.

Trong đời sống, việc uống rượu say rồi phạm vào những điều xấu ác không phải là chưa từng xảy ra. Thế nhưng, những người uống rượu vẫn luôn cho rằng việc đó... không xảy đến với họ, vì họ luôn biết tự kiềm chế để không quá say sưa. Vậy phải chăng quan điểm “uống rượu không say thì không phạm giới” sẽ luôn được sự ủng hộ của nhiều người?

Thật ra, đã là người Phật tử thì việc xác định một vấn đề, một quan điểm là đúng hay sai, trước tiên chúng ta phải dựa trên nền tảng những lời Phật dạy. Đức Phật chế định giới không uống rượu, tuy có châm chước việc sử dụng trong trường hợp trị bệnh, nhưng hoàn toàn không có nghĩa là “cho phép uống vừa phải”. Cách lập luận này chỉ có thể xem là ngụy biện mà thôi. Bởi vấn đề quan trọng nhất ở đây không phải là việc uống một đôi chút rượu bia có hại hay không, mà vấn đề là

Bởi vậy, khi xét đến điều giới này, trước hết chúng ta cần quán chiếu tất cả những tác hại của rượu – và các chất gây say, gây nghiện – để có một thái độ rõ ràng, dứt khoát phải tránh xa chúng, thay vì nhập nhằng trong tình trạng thỉnh thoảng lại phạm vào một chút.

Điều đáng chú ý ở đây là, khi quý vị xác định khuynh hướng giữ giới một cách dứt khoát, thì việc tránh xa rượu bia lại trở nên dễ dàng hơn nhiều so với tình trạng “lúc uống lúc không”. Bởi vì việc uống rượu vốn chỉ là thói quen được tập thành, nếu ta đã từ bỏ được thì sẽ không còn cảm thấy bị lôi cuốn, cám dỗ gì nữa, còn nếu vẫn duy trì thói quen đó thì sự cám dỗ, thôi thúc trong nhiều trường hợp sẽ rất mạnh mẽ đến mức không cưỡng lại được.

Thử tưởng tượng đối với những người chưa từng uống rượu, nếu bị ép phải nhấp vào một ngụm thì cảm nhận đầu tiên là đủ các vị cay, đắng, nồng, hôi, thậm chí súc miệng năm bảy lần vẫn còn cảm thấy miệng hôi không chịu được. Thế nhưng, qua vài ba lần “tập luyện”, quen dần với ma men thì bắt đầu thấy ngọt, thấy thơm, không uống không chịu được. Như vậy, thói quen ấy là do chính ta tập mà thành, không phải tự nhiên mà có. Nếu quán xét thấy được những  tai hại của nó,tại sao không thể dứt khoát bỏ đi? Một

Tuy nhiên, việc giữ giới không uống rượu trong xã hội ngày nay, phải thừa nhận là cực kỳ khó khăn. Khi nhà máy sản xuất bia rượu được phong anh hùng lao động, và chuyện vui chuyện buồn gì trong xã hội cũng đều có mặt ma men, thì một người giữ vững được quan điểm, cách sống của mình xem ra không thể dễ dàng. Đi đến đám tiệc nào, cuộc giao tế nào, dường như cũng thấy người ta lấy rượu bia làm thước đo của lòng hiếu khách. Hầu như gắn liền với những cuộc vui có chạm ly chạm cốc chỉ có những tràng cười, những khuôn mặt hân hoan hỉ hả mà thôi...

Thế nhưng, chỉ cần điểm qua một vài con số thống kê khi ra khỏi bàn rượu, có lẽ chúng ta sẽ khó mà giữ được nụ cười. Theo thống kê của Ủy ban An toàn giao thông Quốc gia, khoảng 40% số vụ tai nạn giao thông liên quan đến rượu bia và con số này đang có xu hướng gia tăng ngày càng nhiều hơn. Còn riêng tại Bệnh viện Việt Đức, thống kê cho thấy có đến 60% số ca cấp cứu là liên quan đến rượu bia. Điều này thật hoàn toàn dễ hiểu, vì khi đã có hơi men thì phản xạ lúc lái xe không còn chính xác, và do đó ngay cả những người không uống rượu khi lưu thông trên đường gặp phải các “ma men” thì vẫn phải chịu chung số phận.

Và phía sau những con số thống kê này là những thương tật vĩnh viễn, những người mẹ mất con, vợ mất chồng, con mất cha... những gia đình

Đó là chưa nói đến những trường hợp nghiện ngập thực sự khi mà người uống rượu đã đi đến chỗ giao trọn cuộc đời mình cho ma men. Những gia đình như thế chắc chắn sẽ là những địa ngục trần gian, bởi không một người mẹ, người vợ nào có thể cứu vãn được nữa. Và những đứa con lớn lên trong những gia đình như thế dường như chỉ có một lựa chọn duy nhất là đi theo con đường nghiện ngập, bởi chúng như những chồi non thui chột không đủ điều kiện để vươn lên tỏa sáng trong ánh mặt trời. Những người chồng, người cha như thế, chắc chắn không thể làm tấm gương sáng cho chúng học hỏi noi theo.

Riêng đối với người Phật tử thì tác hại của rượu còn có thể xem là lớn hơn gấp nhiều lần. Bởi những khổ đau trong đời sống này bất quá cũng kéo dài không quá giới hạn của một đời, nhưng rượu gây tác hại đến sự sáng suốt của đầu óc, và do đó cản trở, hủy hoại con đường tu tập của người Phật tử, và điều đó sẽ để lại tác hại đến nhiều đời sau nữa. Khi đã phát tâm tu tập, làm theo lời Phật dạy, mà chấp nhận để cho bia rượu xen vào đời sống của mình thì người Phật tử đó không thể nào vững bước đi trên con

Điểm qua những tác hại như trên mới thấy rõ được rằng sự chế định của đức Phật từ cách đây hơn 25 thế kỷ là vô cùng sáng suốt và cho đến ngày hôm nay vẫn hoàn toàn đúng đắn. Cho nên, người Phật tử đã phát tâm giữ giới thì không nên chấp nhận theo những quan niệm nhập nhằng, thiếu sự dứt khoát. Cần phải xác định một cách rõ ràng, rạch ròi giữa đúng và sai, nên hay không nên, và phải có đủ ý chí, quyết tâm để thực hiện điều mình đã chọn. Có như vậy mới xứng đáng là người tu học theo giáo pháp của đức Như Lai.
